The New Wood Age: a new vision

Woods for the Trees presents a broad vision for a new Wood Age. By using the example of Cowan Court at Churchill College in Cambridge, audiences can relate to a local example and see the outcome, if the trees for it were planted locally.

About this event

Woods for the Trees would like to present a broad vision for a new Wood Age (the subject of Max Adams's new book, to be published in 2022).

In this vision, we see local solutions to both climate change and the human/nature disconnect in a new 'social ecology', a nexus that runs from the invertebrates in a woodland soil all the way to new wood engineering technologies in hi-rise city blocks and the creation of sustaining, nourishing environments.

In this vision humans are not merely conservators but local active ecological partners in placing wood and trees back at the heart of the human cultural endeavour.

By using the example of Cowan Court at Churchill College, Cambridge, audiences can relate to a local example and see the outcome, if the trees for it were planted locally.

About the organiser:

Max is an archaeologist, woodsman and author, a founding director, with Stuart Davies and Jonathan Culling, of Woods for the Trees – a not for profit CIC that aims to put people, trees and land together for mutual benefit.  His books The Wisdom of Trees and Trees of Life make the case for a joined up 'social ecology' and his next book, a history of wood and people, will take the case further.  He owns and manages two young plantations in County Durham.
